Medical Acupuncture is based on the same classic tenets of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) but with a more western, scientific bend. While the benefits of both forms of acupuncture are similar, the philosophy behind each is slightly different. Medical acupuncture is quite literally acupuncture done by a licensed MD (Doctor of Medicine) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) with additional training in acupuncture. It is the brainchild of Dr. Joe Helms, a UCLA professor who began teaching physicians acupuncture in 1983; his premise was that acupuncture could readily be taught to physicians with their preexisting backgrounds in medicine.

The Wege Institute offers its patients the option of both medical and traditional Chinese forms of acupuncture. Medical acupuncture is governed by the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, which is responsible for the continuing medical education and credentialing of its members.
