Thai Massage

Thai massage is an ancient style of bodywork that can be traced back thousands of years. It is a companion therapy to the family of Oriental Bodywork, which concentrates on the principles of energy balance theory for health and healing. A cross between acupressure, yoga and shiatsu, the massage consists of techniques using slow, rhythmic compressions and stretches along the body’s energy lines—also referred to as meridians, or sen lines. When receiving a treatment, these energy lines will be palm pressed, stretched, connected and held in ways that will bring the body into balance, thus creating a greater state of physical and emotional harmony. All Thai massages—traditional or herbal—offered at The Wege Institute for Mind, Body and Spirit are performed by a board certified, nationally and internationally trained Thai massage practitioner.

The treatment itself takes about 1½ hours to complete and concentrates on applying pressure along ten of the body’s most critical energy lines. Unlike other forms of massage, no oils are used and to make the patient as relaxed as possible, they are asked to wear loose comfortable clothing throughout the massage. By using their palms, thumbs, elbows and feet, our certified massage therapists work the energy lines, beginning with the inner feet and legs and work points along the back, arms, neck and face. The treatment is tailored to the patient’s specific therapeutic needs and is never painful. In fact, each patient is encouraged to dictate how deeply or how far a movement is taken. Individuals are never pushed past the limits of their comfort; they are only moved within their range of flexibility.
